BALTIMORE, MD - Signal Hill Chairman and CEO Scott Wieler recently led a panel at the M&A Atlas Growth Intelligence Forum about the mid-market M&A environment. Mr. Wieler discussed the state of mid-market M&A in 2016, confidence as a barometer of forward levels of activity, the outlook for 2017, and the growing role of financial sponsors in the market and the technology sector, particularly in software and security.
“What we see is remarkable consistency over time in terms of the dollar volume of business under $500M,” Mr. Wieler said. “We’re projecting a down year overall from a terrific 2015 (annualized basis through the third quarter of 2016), but the absolute level of performance remains strong relative to trends over the last 10 years. The market paused in the pre-election period of uncertainty but since then everyone has seen an acceleration of new business, so we expect 2017 to be solid out of the gates.”
Mr. Wieler also noted that five of the top 10 technology transactions under $500M were backed by financial sponsors. “We see tremendous opportunity to orchestrate and extract value for entrepreneurs whose businesses have achieved platform status, with strategic and financial sponsors doing M&A and providing growth capital in this category,” he commented.
